How to convert stones and pounds to kilograms (and back)
In the UK we still often talk about body weight in stones and pounds, while doctors, gyms and most apps use kilograms. Here's how to convert between them.
The key numbers
- 1 stone = 14 pounds
- 1 stone = 6.35 kg
- 1 pound = 0.4536 kg
- 1 kg = 2.2046 pounds
Stones and pounds to kilograms
- Turn everything into pounds: multiply the stones by 14 and add the extra pounds.
- Multiply the total pounds by 0.4536.
For example, 11 stone 6 pounds is (11 × 14) + 6 = 160 pounds. 160 × 0.4536 = 72.6 kg.
Kilograms to stones and pounds
- Multiply the kilograms by 2.2046 to get pounds.
- Divide by 14. The whole number is your stones, and the remainder is the extra pounds.
For example, 80 kg × 2.2046 = 176.4 pounds. 176.4 ÷ 14 = 12 stone, with 8.4 pounds left over, so about 12 stone 8 pounds.
