Is an electric car on salary sacrifice actually worth it in 2026?
Electric car salary sacrifice schemes have taken off, and for good reason. The tax rules make an EV through work far cheaper than leasing one yourself. But the headline "save up to 60%" claims come from companies selling the schemes, so here's a straight look at how it actually works.
Why it saves so much
Your employer takes the lease cost out of your gross pay, before income tax and National Insurance. So you don't pay tax or NI on that slice of salary. A higher-rate taxpayer saves 42% straight away. The only tax you pay in return is benefit-in-kind, and for electric cars that's just 4% of the car's value in 2026/27, compared with 25% to 37% for petrol and diesel. That gap is the whole trick.
A real example
Say a £40,000 electric car leases for £500 a month through work, and you're a 40% taxpayer. The sacrifice saves about £3,480 a year in tax and NI, so your take-home pay only drops by around £2,520. Add £640 of benefit-in-kind tax, and the true cost is roughly £263 a month. A basic-rate taxpayer saves less, because their tax and NI savings are smaller, so the deal is best for higher earners.
Then there's the fuel
Running an EV is cheap if you can charge at home. At the standard home electricity rate, a typical electric car costs about 7p a mile, against roughly 17p for a 45 mpg petrol car. Over 10,000 miles that's about £700 a year versus £1,700. On a cheap overnight tariff the EV can drop to around 2p a mile. If you can only use public rapid chargers, though, the running-cost saving mostly disappears.
The catches
Your salary can't fall below the minimum wage after the sacrifice. Leaving early, for instance if you change jobs, can trigger a charge, so you need to be confident you'll stay for the term. The benefit-in-kind rate rises by one point a year to 9% by 2029/30, still low, but worth noting on a long lease. And because it lowers your gross salary, it can reduce salary-based pension contributions and the income a mortgage lender will use, though many schemes protect your pension.
Work out your own numbers
